Developing a new product can be an overwhelming experience. With aspects like scent, texture, efficacy and stability to consider, it can be difficult to know where to begin, especially when crafting something as personal as personal care. When it came to creating Serendipity, we knew the first step on our journey to pure, natural skincare had to begin with essential oils.
So what makes essential oils (EO) so essential to our mission? EOs are derived from aromatic essences of plants, trees, fruits, flowers, herbs and spices. Cherished for centuries, EOs have many medicinal properties and can be inhaled and/or applied to the body, where their small molecular size allows them to be easily absorbed. Different from vegetable or animal oils, EOs lack fatty acids, but they do contain plant hormones and organic chemical compounds that regenerate and oxygenate new cells. The quality of EOs varies greatly and is dependent on growing conditions, age of the plants and the skill of those performing distillation.
Essential oils are also at the heart of the ancient art of aromatherapy, which is defined as the use of fragrant essential oils extracted from herbs, flowers and fruits to enhance a feeling of well-being.
Essential oils are not the same as perfume oils, which tend to be synthetic and are created to smell like a specific plant, fruit or other aroma. Perfume oils, while generally less expensive than EOs, do not offer any medicinal or healing properties.
By adding key essential oils to our products, we’re not only delivering benefits to your skin and hair, but also to your state of mind. For example, the Mandarin essential oil (Citrus Reticulata) found in our core liquids not only helps to balance oily skin and brighten dull-looking skin, but also has an uplifting effect on your senses. Bergamot essential oil (Citrus Bergamia) is also good at lifting spirits, while thought to alleviate various skin conditions.
As the Serendipity collection continues to grow, we will continue to seek out EOs to enhance our products and have a positive impact on your lives.
